A while back I watched a documentary called The Human Experiment which highlighted the amount of chemicals, parabens and synthetic ingredients found in everyday products. While this was not a surprise to me initially, as most of us know that we are exposed to toxins on a daily basis, the alarming thing was the detrimental side affects these ingredients have on our bodies and their association with illness.
Skincare is particularly important, as our skin is the largest organ and absorbs whatever we put onto it. In light of my new knowledge, I proceeded to download an app which highlighted the potentially toxic ingredients in products by scanning the barcodes of all my beauty and skincare items in my bathroom, most of which were in the red danger zone for high chemical, paraben and synthetic ingredients. More than a little alarmed by my findings, I replaced all these products with a natural organic brand called Sukin Organics, their philosophy centres on producing cruelty free, carbon neutral and vegan products. I absolutely love their products and still use them daily.
When I got pregnant I started to think about what skincare products I would use on bub when he or she arrived. After some research, I found Storksak Organics, a company that ticked all the boxes, as it has a certified organics baby range and is also ethical in its approach as it does not test on animals. I currently have the little traveler set, which is a great start and includes a good sized Baby Wash & Shampoo, Baby Lotion, Baby Balm and Hand and Face Wipes (for mum, dad and bub). The majority of their ingredients are completely natural and they aim to source these ingredients from organic farming, which is great for the planet.
Another company I’ve come across is Childs Farm. Childs Farm primarily uses natural ‘free-from’ ingredients and essential oils producing a gentle, great for sensitive skin and very mild range of skincare for newborns. I currently have the Baby Wash, Baby Moisturiser, Nappy Cream and Baby Oil. I scanned the products with my app and they contain no parabens, SLSs, mineral oils or artificial colours which is a huge plus. This means their gentle and safe to use on delicate newborn skin.
Using a combination of the two skincare lines above, I hope I’m heading in the right direction in eliminating toxins from bub’s early life. One step at a time!
